National Health and Fitness Day is an annual coast-to-coast celebration of wellness held on the first Saturday of June. Originally conceived after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics to promote grassroots fitness, this event was formally established countrywide in 2014 through the unanimous passage of the National Health and Fitness Day Act.

Since then, this special occasion has rapidly grown into a nationwide movement motivating Canadians to discover the mental and physical health benefits of physical activity. The National Health and Fitness Day Act formally recognizes the first Saturday in June as National Health and Fitness Day in Canada. Canada Activities

National Health and Fitness Day 2021

The 2021 National Health and Fitness Day on June 5th focused on overcoming pandemic barriers to safely hold socially-distanced events. Toronto hosted outdoor dance workouts in 25 parks across the city, with free registration for 100 participants per location.

In Edmonton, the University of Alberta organized virtual events like at-home scavenger hunts and online trivia contests with fitness prizes. Over 800 students and faculty joined in.

National Health and Fitness Day 2022

The 2022 event on June 4th saw widespread excitement and participation across Canada. In Vancouver, free outdoor yoga classes organized by the Vancouver Park Board attracted over 800 people to Stanley Park, with sessions running from 8am to 12pm.

Meanwhile, Halifax hosted its 6th annual National Health and Fitness Day 5km fun run, with a record 650 runners registered for the June 4th event. Funds raised were donated to child nutrition programs.

National Health and Fitness Day on June 3rd, 2023, saw Winnipeg achieving a notable milestone with the largest open-air yoga class held along the Assiniboine River. This 45-minute session not only attracted local participants but was also live-streamed online, allowing for widespread engagement.

In Charlottetown, PEI, the day was marked by a family-friendly Olympics at Victoria Park on the afternoon of June 3rd. The event featured a variety of traditional games, including potato sack races and tug-of-war, fostering community spirit and family fun.

Across Canada, fitness centers and communities embraced the spirit of the 2023 National Health and Fitness Day with a host of exciting events. The day successfully built on the foundation of previous years, continuing to promote wellness and active lifestyles nationwide.
